Tamil Nadu and Kerala BESS tenders show divergent tariffs
Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited and NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd have awarded large standalone Battery Energy Storage System projects with differing tariff outcomes. Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited awarded a 375 MW / 1,500 MWh BESS project with a lowest tariff of Rs 3.15 lakh per MW per month, reflecting a requirement of 1.5 cycles per day over 15 years. In contrast, NVVN awarded a 250 MW / 500 MWh project for Kerala at a lowest tariff of Rs 1.81 lakh per MW per month, based on 420 cycles per year over the same tenure. The higher Tamil Nadu tariff reflects the more intensive operating profile compared to Kerala. The awards highlight continued momentum in standalone BESS procurement despite cost and policy pressures.
Tata Power arm commissions 198 MW wind project in Tamil Nadu
Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited has commissioned a 198 MW wind energy project in Karur district, Tamil Nadu, to supply power to Tata Steel under a group captive arrangement. The project comprises 55 wind turbine generators of 3.6 MW each and is expected to generate about 31 million units of electricity annually. TPREL said the project will offset around 26,350 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions and support Tata Steel’s decarbonisation goals. The company executed the project under a self EPC model and completed turbine installation within 167 days. With this commissioning, TPREL’s renewable utility capacity has reached 11.6 GW.
Power Grid arm commissions Khavda Phase II-C transmission project
Power Grid Corporation of India Limited said its subsidiary, POWERGRID Khavda II-C Transmission Limited, has achieved commercial operation of the Khavda Phase II Part C transmission project from 31 January 2026. The scheme supports evacuation of 4.5 GW of renewable energy from the Khavda pooling station under the inter state transmission system. The project includes major substation works at Ahmedabad and a new 765 kV double circuit transmission line spanning about 220 km. Power Grid said the project strengthens grid readiness for large scale renewable integration. The project was developed under the regulated competitive bidding framework.
