As of August 2024, India’s total installed capacity reached 4,50,759.56 MW, covering coal, lignite, gas, hydro, nuclear, and renewable energy sources. The total installed capacity from renewable energy sources was 1,52,654.48 MW.
In the State Sector, the installed capacity totalled 1,08,276.94 MW. Of this, 69,977.50 MW was from coal, while 27,254.45 MW came from hydro. Renewable energy contributed 2,602.62 MW to the state sector’s total capacity.
In the Private Sector, the total installed capacity stood at 2,38,029.70 MW. Coal-based capacity was 72,972 MW, and renewable energy contributed 1,48,419.56 MW.
The Central Sector contributed 1,04,452.93 MW to the overall capacity. Coal-based thermal plants provided 68,020 MW, and nuclear power accounted for 8,180 MW. Renewable energy capacity in the central sector was 15,742.72 MW.
Region-wise, the Northern Region had an installed capacity of 1,28,902.64 MW, with coal contributing 56,657.95 MW and renewable energy sources contributing 42,219.97 MW. The Western Region had a total capacity of 1,49,351.34 MW, with 74,662.64 MW from coal and 51,679.71 MW from renewable energy. The Southern Region had 1,30,969.02 MW, with coal contributing 49,415.02 MW and 56,061.05 MW from renewable sources. The Eastern Region had 35,879.81 MW, with 28,991.87 MW from coal and 2,043.52 MW from renewable sources. The North-Eastern Region had a total capacity of 5,497.09 MW, with 1,242.02 MW from coal and 1,944.01 MW from renewable energy.
