The Prime Minister has laid the foundation stone for Powergrid Corporation’s interstate transmission project for evacuating power from Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 and 4 in Tamil Nadu. The project is estimated to cost Rs 550 crore.

The scheme involves a 400 kV double-circuit (quad) transmission line from Kudankulam to the Tuticorin-II gas-insulated substation (GIS), along with the installation of two 400 kV GIS terminal bays at Tuticorin-II. It is being implemented by Powergrid Kudankulam Transmission Limited under the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS).

The infrastructure will enable evacuation of 2,000 MW of nuclear power to Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Puducherry. It is expected to help meet regional demand and support the country’s broader energy transition goals.

According to Powergrid, the transmission line contributes to India’s target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy by 2030. The company also reported maintaining an average system availability of over 99.84% through increased use of automation and digital tools.
