Pine Gate Renewables has received final discretionary approval from the Oregon Energy Facility Siting Council (EFSC) to begin construction of the 2.4GW Sunstone solar project, which includes 1.2GW of solar capacity and 1.2GW of energy storage.

This project is set to become the largest proposed solar and storage project in the United States.

The approval marks a major milestone for both the company and Oregon’s clean energy efforts. The decision follows an extensive evaluation and public involvement process, clearing the way for Pine Gate Renewables to proceed.

The company has worked closely with Morrow County and local agricultural organizations to create a program that will contribute over $1,000 per acre of the project area to a fund supporting agricultural economic activities, particularly in enhancing the sustainability of Morrow County’s wheat farms.

The energy generated will be distributed via the Bonneville Power Administration through the Umatilla Electric Cooperative system. Construction will begin in phases starting in 2026, with the engineering and procurement phase set to begin in early 2025.
