Octopus Energy and Skyborn prequalified for French offshore wind tender
Octopus Energy Generation, in partnership with Skyborn Renewables, has been selected by the French government to participate in the ninth offshore wind tender. The winners are expected to be announced in late 2025.
Skyborn Renewables brings over 20 years of offshore wind development experience, including the recent commissioning of the 500 MW Fécamp wind farm in partnership with EDF Renewables, Enbridge Inc., and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments). Skyborn also has another offshore wind project under construction in France.
This partnership marks Octopus Energy’s first entry into early-stage offshore wind tenders globally, building on its investments in offshore wind since 2022. Octopus has backed six wind farms across the UK, Netherlands, and Germany, and launched its Offshore Wind Fund, Vector, to accelerate development in this sector. Through this fund, Octopus has invested in innovative floating offshore wind technology via Ocergy, which operates in France.
Octopus has already invested $2 billion in offshore wind globally and plans to invest $20 billion by 2030.
Octopus Energy Generation CEO Zoisa North-Bond emphasized the importance of offshore wind in France’s energy transition, noting the partnership with Skyborn as a pivotal moment in Octopus’s global offshore wind strategy. Guillain Chapelon, Managing Director of Skyborn France, expressed confidence in the partnership, highlighting its strength in delivering robust projects.
Octopus has over 360 MW of wind and solar projects in France. Octopus Energy also supplies energy in France and aims to reach 1 million customers by 2030, offering initiatives such as its ‘Fan Club,’ which provides discounted electricity for customers near wind farms.
In September 2024, Octopus Energy announced a £2 billion investment in UK renewable energy projects by 2030, focusing on solar capacity, including 222 MW currently in the pipeline.
