NTPC Limited has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Électricité de France (EDF) to explore cooperation on new nuclear power projects in India, according to a regulatory filing dated April 8, 2026.
The agreement, signed with government approval, establishes a framework for joint feasibility assessment. The scope includes evaluating EDF’s European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) technology for Indian conditions, examining localisation opportunities for large-scale deployment, assessing tariff and economic viability, identifying potential project sites, and developing workforce capabilities through training programmes.
The MoU was signed by Arnada Prasad Samal, Chief General Manager of NTPC’s Nuclear Cell, and Vakisasi Ramany, Senior Vice President for International Nuclear Development at EDF.
NTPC currently has over 89 GW of installed capacity, with an additional 32 GW under construction. The company is targeting 149 GW of total capacity by 2032, including 60 GW from renewable energy. Nuclear power forms part of its diversification strategy alongside green hydrogen, pumped hydro, and battery storage.
The MoU is non-binding and does not commit either party to project execution or procurement. It signals continued engagement on international nuclear collaboration as India seeks firm generation capacity to support a growing share of renewable energy.
