NTPC deploys hydrogen fuel cell buses in Leh

Author: PPD Team Date: June 23, 2025

NTPC Limited has handed over five hydrogen fuel cell buses to the Sindhu Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (SIDCO), under the Ladakh administration. These buses will soon begin commercial operations in Leh.

This deployment follows the earlier commissioning of India’s highest-altitude hydrogen fuelling and green hydrogen mobility station in Leh in November 2024. Situated at 11,562 feet, the station has a daily capacity of 80 kg of hydrogen and is powered entirely by a co-located 1.7 MW solar plant.

The project is expected to cut carbon emissions by 350 metric tonnes annually and generate 230 metric tonnes of pure oxygen, equivalent to planting nearly 13,000 trees.

NTPC is documenting operational learnings from this initiative to support wider replication across similar terrains in India. With over 81 GW of installed capacity, NTPC is targeting 60 GW of renewable energy by 2032.
