Trincomalee Power Company Limited (TPCL), a 50:50 joint venture between NTPC Limited and Sri Lanka’s Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), has started work on a 50 MW solar project in Sri Lanka’s eastern province. This marks a key step in cross-border energy cooperation.

The project is part of a larger plan to develop 120 MW of solar capacity in phases. Phase I, comprising the initial 50 MW, has secured both the power purchase agreement with CEB and the implementation agreement with the Sri Lankan government.

The estimated investment for the entire solar project is around $100 million. Once operational, it is expected to help avoid about 200,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually and contribute to Sri Lanka’s clean energy goals. Power generated will be fed into the national grid through high-voltage lines via Habarana to the Veyangoda substations.

In addition to the solar project, TPCL is also handling the development of a 2 x 250 MW coal power plant in Sampur, with a projected cost of about $512 million.
