NTPC Limited is currently in talks with the Bihar government to set up a nuclear power plant in the Nawada district.
The state has formally approached the Ministry of Power, requesting that Bihar be considered for this major nuclear project.
The proposed plant is set to be developed as an independent initiative, with water potentially sourced from the nearby Phulwaria dam to meet the plant’s extensive water needs. The discussions suggest that additional water may need to be drawn from the Ganga River, as Nawada’s local water resources may not be enough for the plant’s requirements. The company has requested land allocation from the Bihar government and is set to conduct detailed feasibility studies before advancing the project.
This proposed nuclear plant will be developed in collaboration with Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Limited (ASHVINI), a joint venture between NTPC and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL). ASHVINI is authorised to build, own, and operate nuclear power plants in India.
The project, still in its planning and feasibility phase, is expected to be a major milestone for eastern India’s energy infrastructure.
The project aligns with NTPC’s broader strategy to contribute 30 GW towards India’s ambitious target of reaching 100 GW of nuclear energy capacity by 2047.
