NGEL invites bids for 11,100 MWh BESS in Gujarat and Rajasthan
NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited, has invited bids for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) packages to develop a combined 11,100 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity across solar projects in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
The proposed projects include a 7,800 MWh BESS at the NTPC REL Bikaner solar plant in Rajasthan and a 3,300 MWh BESS at the NTPC REL Khavda solar plant in Gujarat. The projects are intended to provide large-scale energy storage capacity integrated with existing solar generation assets.
Rajasthan project
The larger project at the NTPC REL Bikaner solar plant will comprise 1,950 MW/7,800 MWh of BESS capacity across five blocks.
Block-1 will have a capacity of 500 MW/2,000 MWh, while Block-2 will have a capacity of 550 MW/2,200 MWh. Blocks 3, 4 and 5 will each have a capacity of 300 MW/1,200 MWh. Each BESS block will be connected at the 33 kV level of designated solar plants.
The deadline for bid submission is June 15, 2026.
The project specifications require the BESS to maintain a minimum monthly round-trip efficiency of 80% and annual availability of 98%.
Gujarat project
NGEL has also invited bids for a 3,300 MWh BESS at the NTPC REL Khavda solar plant in Gujarat.
The project will be developed in four blocks within the Khavda solar park. Blocks 1, 2 and 3 will each have a capacity of 300 MW/900 MWh, while Block 4 will have a capacity of 200 MW/600 MWh. Each block will be connected at the 33 kV level of a designated 300 MW solar plant.
Bids for the project are due by June 25, 2026.
Scope of work
For both projects, the selected contractor will be responsible for design, engineering, supply, transportation, installation, testing, commissioning and integration of grid-connected BESS facilities on a turnkey basis.
The scope also includes civil and electrical works, equipment handling, integration with solar plants and grid infrastructure, and comprehensive operation and maintenance services for a period of 15 years.
The BESS installations are required to have a design life of 25 years, with batteries capable of completing at least 10,000 operating cycles.
Related procurement
Earlier, in May 2026, NTPC Renewable Energy Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of NGEL, invited bids for the supply of solar photovoltaic modules for 1,200 MW solar projects at Khavda Renewable Energy Park-South Block in the Rann of Kutch, Gujarat.
