MNRE extends self-certification deadline for large solar inverters to Dec 2026
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has extended the timeline for self-certification of solar photovoltaic (SPV) inverters with capacity exceeding 200 kW until December 31, 2026. The extension was notified through the Official Gazette on July 8, 2026, citing limited availability of testing facilities and the need to provide manufacturers additional time to comply with mandatory quality standards.
Background
The Central Government had notified the Solar Systems, Devices and Components Goods Order, 2025 on January 27, 2025 through S.O. 492(E), covering five products and prescribing a compliance period of 180 days from the date of publication. The order superseded the Solar Photovoltaics, Systems, Devices and Components Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2017.
For SPV inverters with capacity above 200 kW (Items 4 and 5), the self-certification timeline had earlier been extended until June 30, 2026, or until further orders, through S.O. 3597(E) issued on August 5, 2025.
Revised timeline
Under the latest notification, manufacturers of SPV inverters with capacity exceeding 200 kW can continue self-certification until December 31, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
The extension applies only to manufacturers holding valid International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) certificates corresponding to the prescribed Indian standards.
For Item No. 4, the applicable standards are IS 16221 (Part 2): 2015 / IEC 62109-2: 2011 and IS/IEC 61683: 1999.
For Item No. 5, the applicable standards are IS 16221 (Part 2): 2015 / IEC 62109-2: 2011, IS 16169: 2019 / IEC 62116: 2014, and IS 17980: 2022 / IEC 62891: 2020.
Manufacturers are also required to submit test reports from accredited testing laboratories for the implementation of the order.
The extension provides additional time for manufacturers of large-capacity solar inverters to meet the prescribed quality requirements amid limited testing infrastructure.
