Mitsubishi Electric Power Products (MEPP) and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation have announced an $86 million investment in the US to expand switchgear production and power electronics capabilities.
MEPP plans to construct a 160,000-square-foot advanced switchgear facility in Western Pennsylvania, its first new manufacturing site in over a decade. The facility will initially produce vacuum and gas circuit breakers, with a focus on vacuum circuit breakers as production scales. Once fully operational, the facility will create 200 full-time jobs. MEPP will also enhance its Warrendale, Pennsylvania site for power electronics and test laboratories.
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is supporting this expansion through a $4 million redevelopment assistance capital program grant and a $2.75 million Pennsylvania First grant from the Department of Community and Economic Development.
MEPP President and CEO Tricia Breeger highlighted the investment’s role in advancing grid modernization and supporting the nation’s decarbonization initiatives. Advanced automation and software technologies will be integrated into both the new and existing facilities to optimize productivity.
In related developments, Mitsubishi Electric announced in April 2024 the transfer of its Nagoya Works distribution transformer business to Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems.
