Midwest Energy starts commercial production at 1.2 GWh BESS facility
Midwest Energy Limited has started commercial production at its Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) manufacturing facility in Bengaluru, strengthening its presence in India’s growing energy storage market. The facility has an annual manufacturing capacity of 1.2 GWh and is designed to cater to commercial, industrial, renewable energy and utility-scale applications.
The development follows the successful trial production of the company’s lithium battery assembly line earlier this year.
Manufacturing capacity
Midwest Energy’s semi-automated facility currently operates at 1 GWh of annual production capacity, with plans to expand to 3 GWh. The company said the manufacturing line incorporates process control, traceability and validation systems, with all incoming battery cells undergoing verification before production.
The integrated Cell-to-Container facility manufactures battery modules, trays, racks and fully integrated containerised energy storage systems. Its product portfolio ranges from 3 kWh to 6 MWh across voltage configurations from 48V to 1500V.
BESS portfolio
The company is developing two flagship products: a 418 kWh outdoor BESS unit for commercial and industrial applications, and a 5 MWh containerised BESS platform for grid-scale deployments.
According to Midwest Energy, the larger system is intended for renewable energy integration, peak demand management, load shifting and grid support applications. The company’s products are aligned with UL 1973, UL 9540 and UL 9540A standards.
Expansion plans
Midwest Energy, the technology and clean energy arm of the Hyderabad-based Midwest Business House, is also expanding into permanent magnet manufacturing. It has established a facility in Hyderabad, Telangana, with a capacity of 500 tonnes per annum (TPA) and plans to increase this to 5,000 TPA.
The commissioning of the Bengaluru plant comes amid rising demand for energy storage systems as renewable energy capacity additions increase and grid operators seek greater flexibility and reliability.
Midwest Energy said it intends to supply BESS solutions to both domestic and international markets while expanding its customised energy storage offerings.
