Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced a phased reduction in electricity tariffs, calling it the first such move in the state’s history. Starting this year, electricity rates will be reduced by 10%, with further cuts planned over the next five years. By 2030, tariffs will drop by a total of 26%.
Fadnavis said nearly 70% of the state’s electricity consumers—those using less than 100 units—will benefit most. These users include a large share of domestic consumers across rural and urban areas.
He thanked the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) for approving the tariff reduction proposal submitted by Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). “This is the first time a petition has been filed for a reduction, not a hike,” he noted.
The decision is expected to benefit domestic, industrial, and commercial users alike. According to Fadnavis, past petitions generally sought increases of around 10%, but this marks a shift towards lowering costs for consumers.
He also announced that the Mukhyamantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana 2.0 is in progress. The scheme aims to provide reliable daytime power for agricultural irrigation. It is a continuation of the 2017 initiative targeting solar-powered solutions for farmers.
