The Government of Laos has signed an agreement with Chitchareune Construction to develop the 1,200 MW Nong wind power project in Savannakhet province, Vietnam, with an investment of USD 1.9 billion.

The project’s feasibility study is underway and is expected to be approved by the second quarter of 2026. The first phase, with a capacity of 702 MW and an investment of USD 1.12 billion, is set for completion by 2027. The second phase, adding 498 MW for USD 797 million, is planned for after 2030.

Once operational, the project will supply Vietnam with 1.53 billion kWh annually in the first phase and an additional 1.11 billion kWh in the second.

Vietnam currently imports 3,464 MW of electricity from Laos, a figure expected to rise to 5,000 MW by 2030, with a long-term potential of 8,000-10,000 MW, as outlined in Vietnam’s Power Development Plan VIII. The country also imports around three billion kWh of electricity annually from China and Laos, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
