Kenya Power has announced an investment of KES1 billion to expand and enhance electricity infrastructure across eleven counties in the Nyanza and western regions.
The funds will support the construction of new power lines to meet growing demand and improve reliability.
The investment covers both completed and ongoing projects in Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Siaya, Nyamira, Vihiga, Busia, Bomet, Kericho, Kisii, and Kakamega. Completed projects include the KES700 million, 132 kV Narok–Bomet line, which aims to improve power reliability in South Nyanza and western regions. Additionally, Kenya Power is advancing the Kibos–Miwani–Ahero and Kisian–Luanda 33 kV line projects, valued at KES189 million, to increase capacity in Kisumu South, Vihiga, and Siaya counties.
Meanwhile, the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company is constructing the 132 kV Ndhiwa–Thur Dibuoro transmission line, expected to be completed by June 2025. This project will reduce pressure on the overloaded Muhoroni–Chemosit line, which has been a major cause of power outages in the region.
In November 2024, Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL) acquired Progressive Grid Networks Limited (PGNL) in Kenya to explore power transmission opportunities across East Africa. Additionally, at the World Climate Action Summit during COP29, Kenya joined five other nations in endorsing a global commitment to triple nuclear energy capacity by 2050, bringing the total to 31 signatory countries.
