India’s power sector continues to expand with a total installed utility capacity of 509,743.09 MW as of November 30, 2025, according to the latest data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
Thermal power remained the largest contributor with an installed capacity of 246,941.62 MW, accounting for 48.5 percent of the total. Renewable energy followed closely at 254,021.47 MW, representing 49.9 percent of installed capacity. Hydro power capacity stood at 8,780 MW, or 1.7 percent, while nuclear capacity was reported at 50,414.66 MW.
Renewable energy sources, as classified under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), included small hydro power capacity of 5,158.61 MW and wind power capacity of 53,986.02 MW. Bio power capacity stood at 10,757.31 MW, including biomass power and cogeneration capacity of 856.62 MW. Waste to energy capacity, including off grid installations, was reported at 832.92 MW.
Solar power capacity reached 132,848.25 MW, covering ground mounted, rooftop, hybrid, off grid, and Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan KUSUM installations. The CEA noted that figures may not tally precisely due to rounding.
The data also reflects temporary adjustments made for long outaged plants. As of 31 May 2025, 1,995 MW of coal based capacity, 4,400.84 MW of gas based capacity, and 100 MW of nuclear capacity were temporarily removed from the installed capacity totals.
Regional Capacity Breakdown
The five regions show varied dominance: Northern at 149,693.18 MW, Western at 173,070.22 MW, Southern at 142,795.55 MW, Eastern at 38,781.89 MW, and North-Eastern at 5,239.17 MW, plus islands at 163.08 MW. Private sector leads in renewables, especially solar, while state and central sectors dominate thermal. Hydro is prominent in central allocations in Northern and Western regions.
Ownership Breakdown
State sector holds 111,958.24 MW total, private leads at 278,563.29 MW (strong in RES at 197,508.40 MW), and central at 119,221.57 MW (8780 MW hydro). Thermal details show coal at 219,610 MW nationally, lignite 6,620 MW, gas 20,122.42 MW, diesel 589.20 MW.
