India’s coal production rose to 86.24 million tonnes (MT) in May 2025, up from 83.96 MT in May 2024, reflecting steady growth in the sector. The Ministry of Coal attributed this to its focus on ensuring stable supply and operations.

Captive and commercial mines produced 16.93 MT during May 2025, a sharp increase from 13.83 MT in the same period last year. This growth signals a stronger contribution from private and commercial players to India’s coal output.

Coal stock with coal companies stood at 122.69 MT as of 31 May 2025, marking a 29.18% increase from 94.98 MT a year earlier. The rise in stock levels is expected to improve supply readiness during peak demand periods.
