India launches Bharat Zero Emission Trucking Policy Advisory
On August 21, 2024, Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, launched the “Bharat Zero Emission Trucking (ZET) Policy Advisory” at Vigyan Bhawan Annexe, New Delhi.
Prof. Sood emphasized the role of Zero Emission Trucks (ZET) in decarbonization and energy security, advocating for strategic policies to support ZET adoption. The advisory outlines 30 policy interventions in areas such as incentives, regulations, infrastructure, business and financing, and stakeholder initiatives. These measures aim to achieve 100% ZET sales by 2050, crucial for India’s Net Zero 2070 goal.
Key takeaways from the Bharat ZET Policy Advisory include:
Economic and Environmental Impact: As India is projected to become a Rs 2,200 trillion economy in the next 25 years, with a significant increase in road-based freight transportation, transitioning to ZETs is essential to reduce emissions and enhance energy security.
Comprehensive Approach: The advisory adopts a technology-agnostic approach, focusing on shaping demand, supply, and robust refuelling infrastructure, emphasizing both incentives and regulations to drive ZET adoption.
Strategic Planning and Implementation: The policy roadmap will be dynamic, incorporating extensive stakeholder consultations and impact assessments to refine the interventions and ensure alignment with national goals.
