Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated 19 projects worth Rs 17.62 billion and laid the foundation for 28 more with a total investment of Rs 51.16 billion. The most significant project is a Rs 36.24 billion green ammonia plant by Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries, located in Tuticorin. This plant will produce 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, exporting zero-emission fuel to Japan. Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha will handle the maritime transportation of the green ammonia.

The project is a collaboration between Sembcorp Green Hydrogen Pte Ltd., Kyushu Electric Power Company, Sojitz Corporation, and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha. Sembcorp’s South Asia CEO, Vipul Thuli, highlighted Tamil Nadu’s pioneering role in both wind energy and now green hydrogen.

Other significant projects inaugurated include a Rs 2.6 billion unit by Motherson Electronic Components in Kancheepuram, a Rs 3.5 billion L&T Innovation Campus in Chennai, a Rs 2.85 billion unit by TVS Indeon in Tiruvallur, a Rs 2 billion industrial park by Jurojin Developers in Kancheepuram, and a Rs 1.41 billion investment by Sundaram Fasteners in Chengalpattu.

Earlier in January 2024, Tamil Nadu signed 631 MoUs worth Rs 6.64 trillion, aiming to create 1.4 million direct jobs and 1.2 million indirect jobs. Since May 2021, the state has attracted investment pledges totalling Rs 9.74 trillion, promising 3.1 million jobs.

State Industries Minister TRB Rajaa noted that Tamil Nadu is the first Indian state to roll out a green hydrogen project. Another significant investment is by Greenko, committing Rs 20.13 billion to establish integrated closed-loop pump storage systems in three districts.
