India and Germany agreed to deepen cooperation in renewable energy, green hydrogen, and sustainable development following the official state visit of German Federal Chancellor H.E. Mr. Friedrich Merz to India on 12-13 January 2026. Energy transition priorities dominated the discussions, reflecting the central role of climate and clean energy in the bilateral partnership.
Both sides reviewed progress under the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP), which is now at its halfway point. Since 2022, around €5 billion of Germany’s €10 billion commitment has been allocated or earmarked. The funding supports India’s Solar Rooftop Programme, National Green Hydrogen Mission, PM e-Bus Sewa, and metro rail projects in Ahmedabad, Surat, and Bangalore.
Renewable energy investment cooperation was reinforced under the India-Germany Platform for Investments in Renewable Energy Worldwide. The leaders welcomed the establishment of Joint Working Groups on Solar Energy Manufacturing, Wind Energy, launched in October 2025, and Battery Energy Storage Solutions (BESS). These groups will focus on technology collaboration, standards, regulation, and resilient supply chains.
Green hydrogen cooperation featured prominently. Both leaders underlined the need to align India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission with Germany’s National Hydrogen Strategy. A key milestone noted was the signing of one of the largest offtake agreements under India’s mission for the supply of Green Ammonia from AM Green to Uniper Global Commodities. An MoU was also signed between the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) and Germany’s DVGW to strengthen cooperation on hydrogen regulations and standards.
To support workforce requirements for the energy transition, a Joint Declaration of Intent was signed to establish an Indo-German Centre of Excellence for Skilling in Renewable Energy. The centre will focus on curriculum development, industry collaboration, and training of trainers.
