India adds 3.6 GW solar open access capacity in first half of 2024, a 153% surge

India added 3.6 GW of solar open access capacity in the first half of 2024, marking a 153% increase from the 1.4 GW installed during the same period in 2023, according to a report by Mercom India. This addition surpasses the total annual installations of all previous years.

In Q2 2024 alone, the country added 1.8 GW of solar open access capacity, representing a 152% year-over-year increase compared to 712.8 MW in Q2 2023. Adani Green was the leading seller in the Green Day-Ahead Market (G-DAM), accounting for 29% of electricity sold, and the pipeline of solar open access projects reached almost 23 GW by June 2024.

The increasing demand for open access solar from industries and commercial units is notable, though challenges like transmission infrastructure availability, supply chain issues due to the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), and inconsistent state regulations are holding back even greater growth. Developers are focusing on wind-solar hybrid projects to make better use of existing infrastructure, while more states are introducing green energy open access regulations.

Karnataka led the way in Q2 2024, accounting for over 40% of new solar open access installations, followed by Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, which accounted for nearly 14% and 11% of cumulative installations in the first half of 2024, respectively. Cumulative installed solar open access capacity stood at 16.3 GW as of June 2024.
