IET launches centres for green hydrogen and EV innovation
Author: PPD Team Date: July 9, 2025
The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has launched two new Centres of Excellence (CoEs) focused on green hydrogen and electric vehicle (EV) technologies. Both centres operate entirely on renewable energy generated onsite, combining solar, wind, and battery storage to ensure uninterrupted power.
The green hydrogen centre features a microgrid with solar panels and wind turbines that directly power electrolysers. This setup allows for zero-emissions hydrogen production and offers a scalable model for future adoption.
The EV-focused centre supports research in battery technologies and smart charging systems. It includes testing infrastructure for evaluating EVs under varying conditions and their integration with renewable microgrids. The goal is to enable high-efficiency EVs suited for diverse terrains.
Both centres use hybrid systems that combine solar PV, wind energy, and battery storage. These systems improve reliability and resilience against grid disruptions, allowing for continuous research and development.
The facilities also act as live learning environments. They offer real-time testing of advanced energy solutions like bidirectional charging, smart grid controls, and electrolyser optimisation. Â
IET is a global engineering body with over 154,000 members across 148 countries. It was founded in 1984 in Uttar Pradesh as a government-funded institution.
