Honda Motor Company has acquired an equity stake in India-based OMC Power to jointly develop clean energy storage solutions using repurposed electric vehicle batteries. The collaboration aims to extend the lifecycle of Honda’s detachable batteries and deploy them for distributed energy storage across rural and semi-urban areas.
OMC Power, backed by Mitsui & Co. and Chubu Electric Power, operates more than 500 renewable energy plants across northern and central India. The company supplies electricity to telecom operators, healthcare providers, small businesses, and rural households through mini-grids and battery systems.
Under the partnership, OMC will repurpose Honda’s electric two- and three-wheeler batteries for stationary storage applications. The project is expected to begin in January 2026 and will support reliable clean energy access in underserved regions while reducing waste from end-of-life EV batteries.
