Highview Power has announced plans to build a long-duration energy storage (LDES) project with a capacity of 2.5 GWh in Ayrshire, Scotland. Located at Peel Ports’ property in Hunterston, North Ayrshire, the project will provide five times Scotland’s current battery storage capacity and is supported by the Scottish government.
The Hunterston LDES project will be developed in two stages. The first phase will establish grid connections and provide grid stability services, while the second phase will build out the liquid air energy storage (LAES) facility. The project will create 1,000 construction jobs and an additional 650 supply chain roles.
The plant will power 650,000 homes for 12.5 hours and is part of Highview Power’s broader LDES development programme, which includes four projects across Scotland and Northern England. This programme aims to enhance the integration of renewable energy and address grid stability issues.
Highview Power CEO Richard Butland emphasised the project’s transformational impact, noting its contribution to solving grid constraints and supporting Scotland’s offshore wind capacity.
