GIZ India signs MoU with Tripura to support renewable energy initiatives
GIZ India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Power, Government of Tripura, Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), and Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) to support the state’s clean energy transition over the next three years.
The partnership will focus on expanding renewable energy deployment, strengthening institutional capacity, and supporting implementation of national clean energy programmes in the northeastern state.
Areas of cooperation
Under the MoU, the parties will work on accelerating the adoption of renewable energy and facilitating the integration of distributed energy solutions across Tripura. The collaboration will also support policy development, regulatory strengthening, and capacity building to enable the state’s energy transition.
The agreement includes support for the implementation of PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and other central government initiatives. In addition, the partners plan to undertake pilot projects, technical studies, and knowledge-sharing activities related to emerging clean energy technologies.
Another area of focus under the partnership is increasing women’s participation in the renewable energy workforce through targeted initiatives and capacity-building programmes.
Clean energy focus
Tripura’s power sector is expected to benefit from increased deployment of decentralised renewable energy systems, including rooftop solar and other distributed generation technologies that can improve electricity access and reduce dependence on distant generation sources.
According to GIZ India, the partnership aligns with the objectives of the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP) between India and Germany and is intended to support locally driven approaches to sustainable energy development.
The MoU signing was attended by V. Anantha Nageswaran, Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India, and Jitendra Kumar Sinha, Chief Secretary of the Government of Tripura.
