Renewable infrastructure developer Field Energy has acquired the 200MW Hartmoor battery storage project from Clearstone Energy, expanding its 11GW portfolio of battery storage projects across Europe.
Located near Hartlepool, County Durham, the Hartmoor facility can store 800MWh of electricity, enough to power 500,000 homes for four hours when fully charged.
The Hartmoor project will play a critical role in balancing electricity supply and demand, stabilizing the grid, and supporting the UK’s increasing reliance on renewable energy. By providing frequency, inertia, and stability services, it addresses the growing variability of renewable generation and aligns with the UK government’s 2030 clean power objectives.
Clearstone Energy secured planning consent for Hartmoor in 2023 and collaborated with the National Energy System Operator to expedite grid connections. This effort complements the surge in renewable energy in northeast England, with the Dogger Bank offshore wind project contributing 3.6 GW to the grid between 2025 and 2028.
Field Energy currently operates three UK battery storage facilities with a combined capacity of 60MW/80MWh and has seven more projects under development, totalling 450MW/1GWh. The acquisition of Hartmoor further strengthens its portfolio of transmission-connected battery sites, which CEO Amit Gudka highlighted as key to reducing constraint costs and supporting the grid efficiently.
The sale allows Clearstone Energy to advance its 2.2GW pipeline of battery storage projects in the UK, including a 400MW/800MWh facility in Devon that received planning consent in April 2024.
