Delhi to build floating solar panels over Munak Canal

The Delhi government is planning a floating solar project on the Munak Canal. The project is in the planning phase. Feasibility studies are underway. A detailed project report and technical design are expected soon.

Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said the canal plays a vital role in Delhi’s water supply but also causes losses and safety issues. “The Munak Canal is a lifeline for Delhi’s water supply. But in its current form, it is also a major source of loss, pollution, and risk,” he said.

The plan covers the 17-kilometre stretch of the canal that lies within Delhi. It includes constructing four-foot-high walls on both sides. Solar panels will be mounted on these structures.

Recent inspections revealed significant water loss. Nearly 30 percent of water is lost in the Delhi Sub-Branch due to seepage and evaporation. The Carrier Lined Channel records 5 percent loss. Both channels are part of the 102-kilometre-long canal system, most of which lies in Haryana.

By covering the canal, the Delhi government aims to reduce evaporation, generate electricity for canal operations, and keep the waterway cleaner and safer. The project will also improve public safety and prevent waste dumping.

Coordination with the Haryana government is ongoing to manage maintenance and ensure smooth operations along the shared canal network.

“This is not just about saving water. It is about protecting lives, generating clean energy, and making Delhi’s infrastructure smarter,” Singh added.
