For the first time, no internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle featured among China’s 10 best-selling passenger car models in a single month, highlighting the rapid shift toward electrified mobility in the world’s largest automobile market. In May 2026, all top 10 positions were occupied by new energy vehicles (NEVs), including battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and range-extended electric vehicles (EREVs).

According to passenger vehicle retail sales data compiled by DCar, Geely Automobile’s Xingyuan electric microcar emerged as the highest-selling passenger vehicle model in May with sales of 38,751 units. Tesla’s Model Y ranked second with 28,911 units, followed by Xiaomi’s SU7 at 24,023 units. Leapmotor’s A10 and Li Auto’s i6 completed the top five rankings with sales of 22,306 units and 20,878 units respectively. All top five models were pure electric vehicles.

Top 10 rankings

The sixth position was held by BYD’s Sealion 06 with 18,856 units, followed by Tesla Model 3 at 18,370 units and Wuling Hongguang Mini EV at 18,308 units. Aito M6 recorded 18,148 units, while Fang Cheng Bao Ti7 ranked tenth with sales of 17,510 units.

Fuel vehicles decline

Among the top 20 passenger vehicle models sold in May, only four were powered by conventional internal combustion engines. Geely’s Boyue was the highest-ranked fuel vehicle at 17th position with 13,395 units sold.

Volkswagen’s Lavida, Nissan’s Sylphy, and Geely’s Binyue were the only other ICE models to exceed 10,000 units during the month.

The decline in conventional vehicle rankings has accelerated in recent months. One fuel-powered model remained in the top 10 in April 2026, compared with five in March and seven in January.

NEV penetration rises

China’s NEV penetration rate, representing the share of NEVs in total passenger vehicle retail sales, reached a record 62.9% in May 2026. This implies that nearly two out of every three passenger vehicles sold in the country during the month were electric or hybrid models.

Cui Dongshu, Secretary-General of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), stated that the pace of electrification is exceeding earlier expectations due to continued policy support and changing consumer preferences.

The trend continued into June. According to CPCA data, NEVs accounted for 67% of passenger vehicle sales during the first week of June 2026.

Market contraction

Despite strong NEV growth, China’s overall passenger vehicle retail market contracted during the month. Total retail sales declined 22% year-on-year to 1.51 million units in May 2026.

Cumulative passenger vehicle sales during January-May 2026 fell 20% year-on-year to 7.1 million units. Sales of fossil fuel-powered vehicles declined 39% over the same period.

According to Cui, rising global oil prices linked to geopolitical tensions have increased the cost of owning gasoline-powered vehicles, affecting purchasing decisions and household spending.

Wholesale and retail gap

In wholesale sales, which include exports and total domestic production, NEVs had already crossed the 50% market share mark during the fourth quarter of 2025.

Data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) showed that NEVs accounted for 53.2% of wholesale vehicle sales in April 2026. The higher retail penetration rate of 62.9% reported by CPCA reflects domestic end-customer purchases and excludes export-oriented production.

Outlook

Industry observers expect China’s transition toward electric mobility to continue as government incentives remain in place and operating economics increasingly favour electric vehicles.

The absence of ICE vehicles from the country’s top 10 passenger vehicle sales rankings in May 2026 marks a significant shift in consumer demand patterns. The transition occurred within months of conventional fuel vehicles still accounting for a majority of top-selling models earlier in the year.
