China is facing unprecedented electricity demand as a severe heatwave grips large parts of the country. The National Energy Administration reported that the national power load crossed 1.5 billion kW for the third time in July 2025, marking a new peak in consumption.
Reuters noted that temperatures have surged across cities including Chongqing, Chengdu, and Guangzhou, driven by a persistent subtropical high-pressure system. State media reported that eight weather stations recorded their highest-ever mid-July temperatures.
Chim Lee of the Economist Intelligence Unit warned that while the power grid has remained stable so far, prolonged heat poses a risk of power rationing. Solar power output played a key role in supporting the grid in June. Hydropower has improved compared to early 2023 but remains below 2022 levels.
Electricity demand rose by 55 million kW from 2024’s peak. Since the start of summer 2025, provincial records have been broken 36 times.
Weather forecasts suggest some relief from 21 July, with a tropical depression near the Philippines expected to strengthen and move toward Taiwan and southern China. However, if blocked by high pressure, air conditioning use may remain elevated, putting further strain on the grid.
