Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and GPS Renewables Private Limited have formed a joint venture (JV) to build 8-10 compressed biogas (CBG) plants in several Indian states, including Bihar, Odisha, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. The JV aims to convert organic biomass waste into CBG, contributing to renewable energy goals and promoting waste-to-energy technology.
The partnership plans to establish CBG production facilities using organic biomass, including agricultural and other organic residues. These plants will be located in regions with significant agricultural biomass potential, making them ideal for CBG production.
The initiative aligns with BPCL’s city gas distribution network, reducing logistics costs and improving operational efficiency. It also addresses environmental challenges by managing agricultural residue, reducing stubble burning, and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the project will support sustainable rural development by creating a structured value chain for agri-residue procurement and providing new income opportunities for farmers.
