Bihar commissions 132 kV line for Kajra solar and battery storage project

Author: PPD Team Date: December 31, 2025

A dedicated 132 kV power evacuation line for the Kajra solar project in Bihar has been commissioned, enabling grid connectivity for one of India’s largest solar-plus-battery storage developments. The line will transmit power from the Kajra facility in Lakhisarai district to the Haveli Kharagpur and Lakhisarai substations.

The newly operational transmission network, equipped with a 100 MVA 33/132 kV transformer, has been completed under the supervision of Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL) and Bihar State Power Transmission Company Limited (BSPTCL). Officials noted that the project marks an important advancement for solar power development in the state and will help strengthen the electricity network, contributing to a more reliable supply.

The Kajra development is a major solar-cum-battery project. The first phase, with an estimated cost of Rs 1,810 crore, includes a 185 megawatt (MW) solar plant supported by a 254 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The second phase, expected to cost Rs 1,055 crore, will add 116 MW of solar capacity and a 241 MWh BESS, with completion targeted for January 2027. Once both phases are completed, the combined facility will have 301 MW of solar capacity backed by a 495 MWh BESS.

According to officials, the integrated system will enable uninterrupted daytime solar generation while the storage component will provide 4 to 5 hours of evening peak supply, supporting grid stability and enhancing system reliability.
