The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has approved the site for the proposed 2,800 MW Mahi Banswara Nuclear Power Project in Rajasthan.
The project will be developed by a joint venture between NTPC Limited and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), with NTPC holding a 49% stake and NPCIL 51%. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 504 billion.
The project involves the construction of four units of Pressurized Heavy-Water Reactors (PHWRs) in a fleet mode, aimed at scaling up domestic nuclear power capacity. It is part of India’s strategy to diversify its energy mix and enhance baseload clean power supply.
Author: PPD Team Date: January 9, 2026 Bihar has commissioned the first phase of the Kajra Solar Power Project in Lakhisarai district, marking a major step in expanding the state’s renewable energy and grid balancing capacity. The project combines utility-scale solar generation with large battery storage to supply power during peak demand hours. The initial phase includes a 185 MW solar photovoltaic plant paired with a 254 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The facility…
Author: PPD Team Date: January 12, 2026 India has taken a step towards creating a unified digital identification and traceability framework for batteries with the release of draft Guidelines for Implementation of Battery Pack Aadhaar System. The draft has been prepared by a committee constituted by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and proposes a standardised digital record for tracking batteries across their entire lifecycle. The proposed Battery Pack Aadhaar (BPAN) is designed…

Author: PPD Team Date: December 3, 2024 A Supreme Court-appointed panel has backed the development of five hydroelectric projects (HEPs) in Uttarakhand, despite opposition from the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) and the Jal Shakti Ministry, which raised concerns over ecological impacts and risks associated with the region’s seismic and landslide-prone nature. The court’s involvement dates back to the 2013 Kedarnath floods, after which it imposed a moratorium on new HEPs and directed the…
Author: PPD Team Date: September 17, 2025 Low-emission hydrogen production is expected to expand this decade despite project delays and cancellations, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in its Global Hydrogen Review 2025. The report noted that global hydrogen demand reached nearly 100 million tonnes in 2024, a 2 per cent rise from the previous year, broadly in line with overall energy demand growth. Most of this demand, however, continues to be met through hydrogen…
Author: PPD Team Date: July 28, 2025 Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Ltd (TNPGCL) will install a 200 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the North Chennai Thermal Power Station on a pilot basis. This is the first such use of battery storage with a coal-based plant in the state. The aim is to store electricity during low-demand periods and avoid frequent shutdowns. Restarting thermal units typically takes 10 to 12 hours. Continuous operation…
