The Adani Group has announced its entry into the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) sector with a 1,126 MW / 3,530 MWh project at Khavda, Gujarat. The facility, comprising more than 700 BESS containers, will be India’s largest energy storage installation and among the largest single-location deployments globally. Commissioning is scheduled for March 2026.
The project will enhance grid stability, enable round-the-clock renewable power, and reduce transmission congestion and solar curtailment. It will form an integral part of the Khavda renewable energy complex, which is already the world’s largest renewable energy plant. Developed using advanced lithium-ion battery technology and integrated with energy management systems, the project will support peak load management and energy shifting, strengthening India’s clean energy infrastructure.
According to Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani, energy storage is key to a renewable-powered future. He said the initiative demonstrates the Group’s commitment to India’s energy independence and sustainability by delivering reliable and affordable clean power at scale.
Following this flagship project, the Adani Group plans to expand its BESS portfolio to 15 GWh by March 2027 and reach a total capacity of 50 GWh within five years. The initiative reflects the Group’s strategy to build large-scale storage infrastructure aligned with India’s net-zero and energy transition goals.
