Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani announced key milestones in the Group’s energy partnership with Bhutan during a recent visit to the country. In a social media post, Mr. Adani stated that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed for the development of 5,000 MW of hydropower capacity. Concurrently, the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydro Electricity Project was officially commenced. The ceremony was attended by Bhutan’s Honourable Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay.

The 570 MW project is being developed by Wangchhu Hydroelectric Power Limited (WHPL), a joint venture company incorporated in Bhutan on October 15, 2025. WHPL was formed by Adani Power Limited (APL) and Bhutan’s state-owned Druk Green Power Corporation Ltd (DGPC) following a shareholders’ agreement signed in September 2025. DGPC holds a controlling 51% stake in the venture, with Adani Power owning the remaining 49%. The company has an authorised capital of BTN 30 billion, with Adani Power’s initial capital contribution amounting to BTN 490 million.

The project, located at Wangchhu, will focus on power generation and supply within Bhutan’s hydro-rich energy sector. Mr. Adani described the initiatives as strengthening a bilateral partnership “rooted in sustainability, trust and long-term value.”
