Adani Saur Urja (LA) Limited, a subsidiary of Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) for energy storage capacity from the 1,250 MW Pumped Storage Project in the Sonbhadra district.

The annual fixed cost payable under the LoA is Rs 76.53 million per MW per year, excluding taxes, for a 40-year period from the Commercial Operation Date (COD). The project will be developed at Soman village in Robertsganj tehsil and is expected to be completed by 2031.

Sonbhadra, known as the “Energy Capital of India,” hosts multiple power plants and industrial units. The district features abundant mineral resources, including coal, bauxite, and limestone. It is home to major power plants, such as NTPC’s Singrauli Super Thermal Power Station (2,000 MW), Vindhyachal Thermal Power Station (4,760 MW), and Rihand Thermal Power Station (3,000 MW). Other key power stations include Anpara, Obra, Renusagar, and Pipri-Hydro.

The district’s industrialization began with cement production in the 1950s and expanded to aluminum, chemicals, and power generation. The Rihand and Obra dams further contribute to the region’s energy supply. Despite its industrial significance, Sonbhadra remains among India’s most backward districts, receiving support from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).
