Westinghouse Electric has partnered with Hyundai Engineering & Construction to pursue nuclear power plant (NPP) projects in Sweden and Finland. The collaboration will focus on deploying Westinghouse’s AP1000 reactor technology, with Westinghouse handling the design and technology development and Hyundai contributing its construction expertise.
This partnership builds on a 2022 agreement between the companies to jointly explore global opportunities for AP1000 plants. The announcement follows Vattenfall’s plans to develop new nuclear reactors at Ringhals in Sweden and Fortum’s recent agreement with Westinghouse to assess nuclear projects in Finland and Sweden. Westinghouse’s AP1000 is a Generation III+ reactor, known for its passive safety systems and modular construction.
Westinghouse currently has four operational AP1000 reactors in China, with 12 more either under construction or contracted. The technology has been selected for projects in Poland, Ukraine, and Bulgaria, and is being considered for additional sites globally, including the UK, Central and Eastern Europe, and North America. The company anticipates 18 AP1000 units operating worldwide by 2030.
This partnership with Hyundai aims to provide long-term energy security for Sweden and Finland while advancing nuclear energy initiatives in the region.
