Tata Power crosses 7 GW operational capacity with new Tamil Nadu plant
Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited, has commissioned a 100 MW group captive solar project at Kayathar in Tamil Nadu, taking its utility-scale portfolio to 12.3 GW and its operational capacity beyond the 7 GW milestone.
Located in Vellalankotai and Nalandhula villages, the project marks the first deployment of Flexible Terrain Compatible Single Axis Tracker technology for a Tata project in India. The plant comprises 261,660 Mono PERC bifacial solar modules and is expected to generate 240.63 million units of clean electricity annually, while offsetting approximately 1.5 lakh tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
Group supply
The electricity generated by the project will be supplied to three Tata Group entities under the group captive arrangement. TP Solar Limited will receive 40.625 MW, Tata Electronics Private Limited will receive 53.125 MW and Tata Realty And Infrastructure Limited will receive 6.25 MW.
The project is intended to support the three entities in meeting their electricity requirements through renewable generation while strengthening the Tata Group’s focus on sustainable operations.
With the commissioning, TPREL’s operational portfolio comprises more than 5.7 GW of solar energy and 1.3 GW of wind energy assets. The company has a further 5.3 GW of capacity under various stages of development, comprising 2.2 GW of solar and 3.1 GW of wind projects. These projects are scheduled for phased commissioning over the next 6 to 24 months.
Tata Power expansion
The Tata Power Company Limited’s total operational and under-construction generation capacity has now exceeded 26 GW. This includes approximately 17.7 GW of clean and green energy capacity and around 8.8 GW of thermal generation capacity.
The company has also established 4.9 GW of integrated solar cell and module manufacturing capacity and signed agreements for 2.8 GW of pumped hydro storage projects. Its electric vehicle charging network has expanded to more than 7,000 public charging points across 717 cities and towns.
