Ola Electric partners with Axis Energy for up to 20 GWh BESS rollout by 2032

Ola Electric Mobility Ltd has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Axis Energy to jointly evaluate the deployment of up to 20 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) by 2032. The agreement is the first large-scale partnership for Ola Mahashakti, the company’s upcoming energy storage platform for commercial, industrial and utility-scale applications, which is scheduled for launch on August 15.

The collaboration signals Ola Electric’s entry into the utility-scale energy storage market and reflects growing demand for battery storage as renewable energy capacity expands. According to the company, the partnership serves as an early validation of Mahashakti’s commercial potential and establishes utility-scale BESS as a new growth segment for its business.

Storage plans

Under the MoU, the two companies will explore the deployment of up to 20 GWh of BESS to support Axis Energy’s renewable energy projects. Battery storage is expected to improve renewable energy integration, enhance grid reliability and enable the supply of firm, round-the-clock clean power.

Axis Energy is developing one of India’s largest pipelines of storage-backed renewable energy projects. The company has secured grid approvals for more than 3,750 MW of projects in Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan and has an additional project pipeline of about 3,500 MW.

These projects span Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE), hybrid and other non-solar configurations, all of which are expected to require large-scale BESS to improve renewable energy integration and provide reliable clean power.

Mahashakti platform

Ola Electric said the partnership is the first major commercial engagement for Mahashakti, its India-designed and India-manufactured BESS platform. The platform is being developed for renewable energy integration, industrial power, grid infrastructure and data-centre applications.

The company said Mahashakti is based on a vertically integrated approach covering cell technology, manufacturing and system engineering. According to Ola Electric, this is intended to improve safety and performance, strengthen supply-chain security and reduce the total cost of ownership over the operating life of the system.

The company also cited Central Electricity Authority (CEA) projections that India will require more than 400 GWh of energy storage capacity by 2032, describing the requirement as a major opportunity for utility-scale battery storage deployment.

Management comments

Commenting on the partnership, Ravi Kumar Reddy Kataru, Chairman and Managing Director, Axis Energy Ventures, said, “As our renewable energy portfolio continues to expand, battery energy storage is quintessential to enabling reliable, round-the-clock clean power.”

He added, “This MoU marks an important step towards evaluating indigenous battery storage solutions that will support the next phase of our renewable energy growth.”
