Tata Power breaks ground on 800 MW Andhra Pradesh renewable project

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited, has conducted the groundbreaking ceremony for an 800 MW renewable energy project in Andhra Pradesh involving an investment of Rs 5,750 crore.

The project comprises 400 MW of solar capacity at Pattikonda in Kurnool and 400 MW of wind capacity at Kanekallu in Ananthapuram. Suzlon will develop the wind component on an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) basis. The overall development will span 3,462 acres, including 2,700 acres for the solar project and 760 acres for the wind project, and is expected to generate around 4,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The project has secured 800 MW of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) connectivity at the Ananthapuram II and Kurnool-4 Central Transmission Utility of India Limited (CTUIL) substations, providing access to the national transmission network for evacuation of the renewable power.

Project scope

TPREL will develop the 400 MW wind component at Kanekallu in Ananthapuram, with Suzlon serving as the EPC contractor. The 400 MW solar component will be developed at Pattikonda in Kurnool.

Of the solar capacity, 200 MW will form part of a Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) project for NTPC. This component will incorporate a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with 25 MW / 50 MWh of storage capacity. The remaining 200 MW of solar capacity is available for future allocation.

The project is being implemented under the Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy (ICE) Policy, which is aimed at encouraging large-scale clean energy investment, accelerating renewable capacity addition and supporting sustainable industrial growth in the state.

Clean energy portfolio

The project forms part of Tata Power’s long-term target of achieving 100% clean energy by 2045. Its renewable energy portfolio currently totals around 17.7 GW, including 9.8 GW under construction.

Across the Tata Power Group, total operational and under-construction capacity exceeds 26 GW, including around 17.7 GW of clean and green energy capacity and around 8.8 GW of thermal generation capacity. The Group also has more than 7,800 ckm of transmission lines and serves more than 13 million distribution customers.

Tata Power has 4.9 GW of solar cell and module manufacturing capacity and has signed pumped hydro storage projects totalling 2.8 GW. Its electric vehicle charging network comprises more than 7,000 public charging points across 717 cities and towns.
