Coal India targets 5 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2028

Coal India Limited (CIL) is aiming to add 5 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2028, with a focus on diversifying into green energy through solar power and pump storage projects in its open-cast mines. The company is in discussions with various countries to acquire critical mineral assets to support its diversification efforts.

CIL has targeted Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka for solar ventures, signing joint venture agreements with state governments to generate and supply solar power. The company has already commissioned 150 MW of solar capacity, with another 450 MW expected to be completed by the end of FY25.

In addition to renewable energy, CIL is exploring critical mineral resources and has acquired a graphite mine in Madhya Pradesh through an auction. The company is focusing on minerals such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, graphite, phosphates, and potash. CIL’s consultancy arm, Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI), is conducting research and surveys on de-coaled mines for potential pump storage projects, with over 200 de-coaled mines available across India.
