Bihar records its all-time high electricity demand of 9,068 MW on June 24
Bihar recorded its highest-ever peak electricity demand of 9,068 MW at 10:56 PM on June 24, 2026, and met the requirement without any power shortage, according to the National Load Despatch Centre’s (NLDC) Daily Power Supply Position report released on June 25.
The milestone reflects rising electricity consumption in the state while highlighting the ability of the power system to meet record demand. On the same day, India’s peak electricity demand reached 250,529 MW at 3:00 PM.
Power supply performance
According to the NLDC report, Bihar consumed 183.49 MU of energy during the day against a drawal schedule of 163.9 MU. The state recorded an over-drawl of 3.41 MU, with a maximum over-drawl of 405 MW and a maximum under-drawl of 758 MW.
The Eastern Region, which includes Bihar, met an evening peak demand of 31,346 MW at 8:00 PM without any shortage. Across the country, total energy supplied stood at 5,652.64 MU, with coal-based generation contributing 4,045.39 MU and renewable energy sources contributing 1,213.51 MU.
The report also noted that there was no power shortage during solar hours at the national level. During non-solar hours, a shortfall of 181 MW was recorded at 10:25 PM. Grid frequency remained stable for most of the day, remaining between 49.9 Hz and 50.05 Hz for 80.35% of the time.
Infrastructure focus
Bihar Energy Minister Shailesh Kumar, also known as Bulo Mandal, said the record demand reflects the state’s economic growth and improving living standards. He said the energy department is preparing for future electricity requirements and is developing power generation strategies to meet projected demand over the next 30 years.
The minister added that meeting the record demand without disruption demonstrates the efficiency of the state’s power system and the coordinated efforts of power sector agencies. He said the department will continue to strengthen transmission and distribution infrastructure to support growing electricity demand.
