NHPC completes boxing-up of Unit 5 at 2,000 MW Subansiri project
NHPC Limited has completed the boxing-up of Unit 5 of the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHEP) located across Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. The milestone was achieved on June 14, 2026, in the presence of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Bhupender Gupta.
The company said the development marks another step towards completion of the hydroelectric project, which has a total installed capacity of 2,000 MW comprising eight units of 250 MW each.
Project progress
NHPC stated that commissioning of Unit 5 will add 250 MW of generation capacity to the grid. With this, the commissioned capacity of the project will increase to 1,250 MW through five units.
At present, four units of the project, Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3, and Unit 4, are in commercial operation, taking the operational capacity to 1,000 MW. Last month, NHPC declared the Commercial Operation Date (COD) of Unit 4 with effect from 00:00 hours on May 8, 2026.
The company said timelines for commissioning of the remaining units will be announced separately.
CMD remarks
CMD Bhupender Gupta said the achievement reflects the dedication and efforts of employees associated with the project. He also acknowledged the role of local stakeholders and executing agencies, including GE Vernova, BGS-SGS-SOMA, TREL, and PEL.
According to NHPC, Gupta highlighted the strategic importance of the project in strengthening India’s clean energy capacity and supporting sustainable development in the region.
