Bhutan hydropower expansion
Bhutan is targeting significant expansion of its hydropower sector under its 13th Five-Year Plan (2024–2029), with a goal of reaching 6,000 MW of installed capacity through continued investment in large hydroelectric projects.
In January 2026, the 570 MW Wangchhu Project was formally launched in Bhutan. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Bhutan Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay.Â
The Wangchhu project is being developed as a peaking run-of-river hydroelectric plant under a Build, Own, Operate, Transfer model. The estimated investment for the project is around Rs 60 billion, including associated infrastructure.
The project is targeted for commissioning within five years from the start of construction.
HCC’s hydropower portfolio

The company stated that it has executed 26% of India’s installed hydropower capacity and 60% of the country’s nuclear power generation capacity.
