GameChange Energy faces patent lawsuit from Nextpower

GameChange Energy said it will defend itself against patent infringement allegations filed by rival Nextpower Inc. in a United States federal court.

The statement followed an announcement by Nextpower that it had filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware. The company alleged that GameChange infringed three patents related to its self-powered solar tracker technology and TrueCapture energy management control system.

According to Nextpower, GameChange’s Genius Tracker products and associated software infringe the patents. The company is seeking injunctive relief and monetary damages under U.S. patent law. GameChange denied the allegations and said it would mount a “full and vigorous defense” against the claims.

The company stated that its Genius Tracker system was independently developed and is designed for challenging weather conditions with energy-enhancing algorithms and simplified installation systems. GameChange also said it has delivered more than 63 GW of systems globally and has been ranked among the top three global tracker companies in independent market surveys.

Dan Shugar, founder and chief executive officer of Nextpower, said the company would “vigorously defend” its patent rights in global markets.

Business expansion

Founded in 2012, GameChange has deployed more than 63 GW of solar tracking systems across six continents. The company has a manufacturing partnership with Jiangsu Zhenjiang New Energy Equipment in China.

In 2025, GameChange commissioned a 180,000-square-foot transformer manufacturing facility in Mumbai with an annual production capacity of 5,400 MVA. Earlier in 2026, the company acquired Terrasmart’s eBOS division, adding 14 GW of project experience and a manufacturing facility in Detroit. The company also partnered with Raptor Maps for asset health monitoring solutions.

Rebranding announced

Separately, the company announced that it had rebranded from GameChange Solar to GameChange Energy. The move consolidates its solar tracker, electrical balance-of-system (eBOS), transformer, and remote asset-monitoring businesses under a single brand.

The divisions had earlier operated under the names GameChange Solar and GameChange BOS. According to the company, the restructuring is aimed at offering a more integrated project delivery approach for developers, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firms, and utilities. The company said there would be no changes to existing operations or teams.
