NHPC begins construction work for 240 MW Uri-I Stage-II project
NHPC Limited has commenced construction activities for the 240 MW Uri-I Stage-II Hydro Electric (HE) Project in Uri, Baramulla district of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir.
Shri Bhupender Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), NHPC, inaugurated the construction works on May 31, 2026, by initiating the first blast for Adit-3A to the Head Race Tunnel (HRT) through the existing Adit-3 in Uri.
The event was attended by Shri Suprakash Adhikari, Director (Technical), NHPC, along with representatives of the District Administration, District Police of Baramulla, and local residents.
During the event, Shri Gupta congratulated NHPC officials and M/s MAX Infra (I) Ltd. for the commencement of project works. He stressed the importance of expediting project execution and completing the project within the stipulated timeline while maintaining quality standards and cost efficiency.
Shri Miren Kumar Verma, Head of Project (HOP), Uri-I Stage-II HE Project, briefed the CMD and senior NHPC officials on various components of the project.
The 240 MW project will be developed under the build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) model with a 40-year concession period. In March 2026, NHPC signed an implementation agreement with Jammu & Kashmir State Power Development Corporation Limited (JKSPDCL) to develop the project in Jammu & Kashmir.
The commencement of work at Uri-I Stage-II follows closely after NHPC began construction activities for the 260 MW Dulhasti Stage-II Project on May 27, 2026.Â
