India added 6.05 GW of wind power capacity in FY 2025-26, marking the highest annual addition on record and surpassing the previous peak of 5.5 GW in FY 2016-17. The increase represents a 46% rise over FY 2024-25. With this addition, the country’s total installed wind power capacity has crossed 56 GW.
Gujarat, Karnataka, and Maharashtra led capacity additions during the year. The growth was supported by improved policy clarity, transmission readiness, competitive tariff discovery, and a growing share of wind-solar hybrid projects. The gradual expansion of open access green energy frameworks also contributed to higher installations.
The government has introduced multiple measures to sustain sector momentum. These include concessional customs duties on turbine components and raw materials, a graded exemption from Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) charges until June 2028, and a competitive bidding framework. Additional support includes a dedicated wind Renewable Energy Consumption Obligation (RCO) mechanism and technical assistance from the National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE).
The capacity addition aligns with India’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030.
