Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has commissioned a 198 MW wind energy project in Karur district of Tamil Nadu to supply power to Tata Steel under a group captive model.
TPREL, a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited, said the project comprises 55 wind turbine generators of 3.6 MW each. The project is expected to generate about 31 million units of electricity annually and offset around 26,350 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, supporting the decarbonisation targets of Tata Steel.
TPREL said it executed the project under a self engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) model, handling balance of plant, civil works, and transmission infrastructure in house. The company said it completed turbine foundations in 126 days and installed all turbines within 167 days.
The commissioning takes TPREL’s renewable utility capacity to 11.6 GW, of which 6.2 GW is operational, including 5 GW of solar and 1.2 GW of wind capacity. A further 5.8 GW is under implementation, the company said.
TPREL said its total wind energy portfolio now exceeds 3.7 GW across projects at different stages in several Indian states. The project supports Tata Power’s target of achieving 100 percent clean energy generation by 2045.
