Hindalco Industries Ltd has commissioned India’s first battery grade aluminium foil manufacturing facility in Odisha and announced a major expansion of its aluminium smelting capacity in the state. The projects involve a combined investment of around Rs 21,000 crore and strengthen domestic supply chains for energy storage, electric mobility and power intensive manufacturing.
The company has expanded the Aditya Aluminium smelter at Sambalpur by 3.6 lakh tonnes per annum. A part of the smelter’s electricity requirement will be met through round the clock renewable energy, linking the capacity addition with Hindalco’s decarbonisation and clean power sourcing strategy. The projects were inaugurated by Odisha Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi.
Alongside the smelter expansion, Hindalco has commissioned a 1.7 lakh tonne flat rolled products and battery grade aluminium foil facility at an investment of Rs 4,500 crore. The battery foil plant is the first of its kind in India and is designed to support up to 100 GWh of lithium ion cell manufacturing capacity, which is relevant for both electric vehicles and stationary energy storage systems.
These investments form part of Hindalco’s broader capital expenditure programme for Odisha, where the company has earmarked around Rs 37,000 crore across upstream and downstream aluminium operations. The expanded flat rolled capacity is expected to reduce India’s import dependence for aluminium flat products by nearly 50%, with applications across packaging, defence, electric mobility and advanced manufacturing.
Hindalco has been operating in Odisha for over 15 years, with cumulative investments exceeding Rs 25,000 crore in bauxite mining, alumina refining, aluminium smelting and downstream facilities. The latest phase of expansion is expected to create more than 15,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Commenting on the developments, Aditya Birla Group Chairman Mr Kumar Mangalam Birla said integration and sustainability are critical to strengthening India’s manufacturing base. Hindalco Managing Director Mr Satish Pai said the new capacities reinforce the company’s integrated upstream to downstream model while supporting emerging energy transition requirements.
Hindalco Industries Limited operates 48 manufacturing units across 10 countries and is the world’s largest aluminium company by revenue. The company has been ranked as the most sustainable aluminium producer in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices for six consecutive years from 2020 to 2025.
