India has commenced trial runs of its first hydrogen-powered train, a significant step toward cleaner rail transport. The testing is being conducted by the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) on the Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway.
The train, developed by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, is undergoing oscillation tests and Emergency Brake Distance trials as part of a comprehensive evaluation. According to Northern Railway officials, the trials are now underway.
While an official launch date depends on successful testing and regulatory approvals, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently indicated the train would be introduced soon.
Upon entering commercial service, India will join a small group of nations operating hydrogen fuel cell trains, including Germany, Sweden, Japan, and China. Indian Railways stated that a dedicated hydrogen production plant in Jind will supply fuel for the train. The plant uses electrolysis, a process central to producing green hydrogen.
This initiative aligns with broader national efforts to develop sustainable transportation infrastructure.
